It seems ridiculous to suggest that 2013 was the year Luke McKenzie arrived as an IRONMAN professional.
After all he went into last year with five victories over the IRONMAN distance to his credit although detractors suggested the Australian had yet to beat a world-class field.
The 33 year old put that to rest with a breakthrough victory at IRONMAN Cairns last year when the strong swim-biker put the field to the sword to hold off the fleet-footed duo of Tim Berkel and Chris McCormack.
McKenzie packed that confidence into his carry-on luggage at Kona, with only a 2:51 marathon from Belgian Frederik van Lierde edging the Aussie to second place.
